Inspired effort leaves competition in the dust en route to 3-stroke win

Callaway Golf Staff Professional Phil Mickelson finished off a virtuoso performance on Sunday at Augusta National to capture his third Green Jacket, fourth major championship and 38th career PGA title. His 5-under-par 67 in the final round led to a three-shot win and, along the way, some of the most inspiring golf in major championship history. One Saturday stretch of play by Mickelson included back-to-back eagles followed by a birdie, during which he went from five shots back to a one-shot lead in a 45-minute span.

For the week, Mickelson shot 67-71-67-67 to finish the tournament at 16-under-par, the lowest score since Augusta National was revamped in the last decade.

“This has been a very special day and a very special week,” Mickelson said following his win. “And to have (my wife) Amy and my kids here to share it with, I can’t put into words. It just feels incredible, especially given what we’ve been through in the last year, to be able to share this kind of joy means a lot to us.”

Mickelson used the FT Tour Driver (7.5 degree), Big Bertha Diablo Fairway Wood (15 degrees), Callaway Prototype Hybrid (22 degrees), an X-Forged 4-iron, X-Prototype Irons (5-PW), JAWS Wedges ( 53, 60 and 64 degrees), the Tour ix Golf Ball and an Odyssey White Hot XG Blade Putter. He also wears HX Tour Footwear from Callaway.

For the week, Lefty averaged more than 297 yards off the tee with his FT Tour Driver and Tour i Series Golf Ball. Several drives traveled more than 350 yards. The FT Tour Driver has now won six events on the PGA Tour in 2010, while Tour i Series Golf Balls have won five times.

On Sunday, Mickelson pulled off one of the most daring and clutch shots in major championship history. From 207 yards away, he knocked a 6-iron from off of a pine needle lie, through trees, and over a creek to within four feet of the hole. “I had a good lie in the pine needles,” he said matter-of-factly. “I was going to have to go through that gap if I laid up or went for the green. I was going to have to hit a decent shot. The gap was a little bit wider—it wasn’t huge, but it was big enough, you know, for a ball to fit through. (Laughter). I just felt like at that time, I needed to trust my swing and hit a shot, and it came off perfect.”

That risk-reward shot paid off and set the stage for a run to his third Masters title. “When I get here to Augusta I get very relaxed and feel very comfortable here and I’m in love with this place and it brings out the best in me,” Mickelson said.
